September 08 07/09/2009 Local patchAs I couldn’t make todays Bird Group meeting I decided to go for a short walk around my local patch in the afternoon. It’s ages since I’ve been there for a birdwatching walk. I saw – Magpie, Coot, Moorhen, Mute Swan, Mallard, Wood Pigeon, Great Tit, Crow, House Sparrow, There was also a small flock of Housemartins flying around, as well as a very large flock of mixed Gulls, but the best birds of the walk were two views of a Kingfisher and a Goldcrest, it's the first time I've recorded Goldcrest there. April 05 My Local Patch 05/04/2009I had a walk around my local patch today I saw - Long-tailed Tit, Blackbird, Mallard, Moorhen, Coot, Mute Swan, Tufted Duck, Canada Goose, Wood Pigeon, Blue Tt, Mistle Thrush, Green Woodpecker, Chiffchaff, Wren, Great Tit, Crow, Magpie, Greenfinch, Collared Dove. It was nice to hear the Chiffchaffs calling and actually get a view of one. The birds were all low in numbers but as there were a fishermen about this could account for it. The area would be a lot better if people would not use it as a dumping ground for their rubbish!!!!! Maybe I should make a list of all the rubbish instead of the birds I'm sure that list would be a lot longer!!!!! I also took some photos while I was there see 'my local patch photos'. October 13 My Local Patch 13/10/2008Today I went for a walk around my local patch, I haven't been there for ages even though it's just a few minutes walk away!!! Not a lot I know, but I did enjoy the walk around apart from all the litter that is about, tha place is full of rubbish, some of it appears to be flytipping, which is a shame as it spoils the whole area!!!! March 01 HATHERTON RESERVOIR About 'My Local Patch' 'Hatherton Reservoir' is only a few minutes walk away from my home., I have been visiting the area for over twenty years. The reservoir was partly rebuilt after the M6 Toll Road which is adjacent to it was constructed. Also the 'Haunchwood pool' and land around which is just across the road from the reservoir was also disrupted by the building of the road. The Toll road was opened in 2003, I aim to see what effect this road has had on the birds and wildlife that use the area. My bird List for the area Before the Toll Road - Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Grey Heron, Mute Swan, Canada Goose, Mallard, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Ruddy Duck, Sparrowhawk, Buzzard, Kestrel, Pheasant, Moorhen, Coot, Black-headed Gull, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Swift, Kingfisher, Green Woodpecker, Skylark, Swallow, House Martin, Grey Wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Sedge Warbler, Blackcap, Long-tailed Tit, Bluetit, Great Tit, Treecreeper, Jay, Magpie, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow, Starling, House Sparrow, Tree Sparrow, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Bullfinch, Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting. Since the Toll Great Crested Grebe, Grey Heron, Mute Swan, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Buzzard, Kesterl, Pheasant, Moorhen, Coot, Black-headed Gull, Common Tern, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Swift, Robin, Blackbird, Common Whitethroat, Wood Warbler, Long-tailed Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Jay, Magpie, Carrion Crow, House Sparrow.
Both areas have public footpaths around them Hatherton has more water birds than Haunchwood, the trees around Haunchwood have bat boxes and some bird boxes, this area is next to farm land. February 14 Hatherton Reservoir 'Local '10/02/2008It was a lovely warm sunny day, so I decided to go for a walk to my local patch, this is a small reservoir which was rebuilt after the M6 Toll Road was built through it! There is also another pool across the road which is mainly used for fishing. Today I saw :- Coot 9, Tufted Duck 15, Black Headed Gull 60+, Moorhen 6, Mallard 21, Blackbird 4, Mute Swan 2, Wood Pigeon 2, Buzzard 1, Magpie 2, Pheasant 1, Long-tailed Tit 3, Robin 3, Great Tit 1. The Buzzard was sitting on the fence next to the Toll Road so I got a great view of this bird. Since they built the Toll road a lot of the birds have disapeared, hopefully they will return in time. I did not visit the other pool this time, but plan a longer walk next time to include both areas. |
